So the race — despite the new map and already-evident political winds – matters because it matters to President Trump. A win, therefore, would allow Trump to crow that the GOP can still win in Trump Country. But a loss would be devastating for him: After all the money, the campaigning and the tariff timing, to have a Republican lose in a district Trump carried by 20 points would suggest there’s not more the president can do to help GOP candidates, even in Trump Country.

In sum, Tuesday’s PA-18 is a perfect microcosm of much of the Trump Era: So much attention and such high stakes on something that didn’t have to be this big – and in large part because Trump made it so.

    https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/07/republicans-pennsylvania-special-elect ion-445221

    • No Democratic incumbent is now rated worse than Likely Democratic, a nod to the reality that in a Democratic-leaning environment it will be difficult for Republicans to dislodge many or perhaps even any Democratic incumbents, though there are a handful of Democratic open seats that are more viable Republican targets.
    • After these ratings changes, for the first time this cycle we have fewer than 218 seats (the number needed for a majority) at least leaning to the Republicans.

    https://politicalwire.com/2018/03/08/26-house-races-shift-towards-democrats/

    http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/03/democratic-senate-looking-like-a-re ach-again.html

    https://www.surveymonkey.com/mp/survey-methodology/

    http://theweek.com/cartoons/760011/political-cartoon-trump-kim-jongun-north-kore a-negotiations

President Trump has already stated publicly that this is a negotiation, a meeting to achieve denuclearization. No one from North Korea has said that. Trump has said that. It is highly unlikely that North Korea will ever agree to that. That sets up high odds of embarrassment and disappointment. Given that President has shown very little inclination to be briefed or take advice, the odds are even greater. So will Trump agree to things he shouldn’t? Will he feel humiliated and react belligerently? It’s a highly unpredictable encounter with an inexperienced and petulant President who will reject almost all counsel. It sounds like North Korea has gotten a really big thing in exchange for very little and has no real incentive to do more than meet, bask, say generic things and not agree to anything. Trump looks like he’s getting played big time. I suspect we will learn that he didn’t consult with any advisors before agreeing to meet.

What does this all mean? As Churchill said, jaw, jaw, jaw is better than war, war, war. We have been on an extremely dangerous trajectory. There are no good solutions. There are probably no realistic paths to North Korea ceasing to be a nuclear power. But you could perhaps find agreements to

limit the scope and reach of the nuclear and missile programs in place (perhaps even scale it back) with some mix of normalization and aid. But we start with an opening gambit in which Trump seems to be stumbling into something of a trap and being guided by his self-importance and vanity rather than any realistic appraisal of the situation.

Despite it being better than the alternative it’s starting in the worst way.

    https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/thoughts-on-the-trump-kim-summit

Given the distance between the two sides, and the unlikelihood that North Korea will fully denuclearize, a lasting agreement does not seem possible. Plus, each side views the talks differently. For the United States, the talks are a means to an end, a way to pressure or coax North Korea into giving up its nuclear program. For North Korea, the talks are an end in and of themselves: The country has long desired the legitimacy a visit from a sitting U.S. president would bring. And if its nuclear arsenal ultimately brought that legitimacy, why would it give it up?

    https://newrepublic.com/minutes/147349/talks-north-korea-probably-wont-go-anywhe re-doesnt-mean-theyre-waste-time

What Kim Jong Un actually wants is “to be bought off. What we may be starting is the haggling phase,” Daniel Russel, who stepped down last year as the State Department’s top diplomat for East Asian and Pacific affairs, argued on Pod Save the World this week. Noting North Korea’s habit of “driving up the fear factor” to painful levels and then releasing “a flood of endorphins in the bloodstream of South Korea and the U.S. and Japan,” he speculated that Kim is looking for “a rental deal where [the Americans] basically pay off North Korea month to month, week to week, to tamp down its misbehavior.”

    https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2018/03/kim-jong-un-negotiatio ns/555023/

Meanwhile, if Trump wants this meeting to accomplish anything of value, he needs to do the following:

First, appoint an envoy to South Korea. (It is amazing that, more than a year into his term, he has yet to do this.)

Second, have his staff bring in the experts on Korea. Swallow hard if this means letting in the occasional Democrat.

Third (and this is a directive more for Trump’s advisers), do not let this meeting take place in Pyongyang. Kim would put on the most extravagant show in the history of the world, and Trump would be so impressed by the welcome that he’d likely embrace the “Hermit King” as his new best friend and concede who knows what at the bargaining table. The meeting should be held in the most boring neutral city in the world.

Fourth (a related point), Trump should not be allowed to meet with Kim all alone. At least one senior aide should be in the room along with a note taker and a State Department translator.

Fifth, the National Security Council should draw up a list of goals—three things, say, that Trump should try to get from this meeting, three things that he’d be willing to offer in exchange for a true pledge to freeze or dismantle the nukes, and three things that the North Koreans are likely to push for but that Trump should reject at all cost.

The NSC should also lay out a road map of where this relationship goes next, tempering expectations for the ultimate deal. I suspect that, just as Trump thought that his very presence in the Oval Office would make America great again, he also thinks his single summit with Kim will unleash a new era of peace, security, and a nuclear-free peninsula. It is hard for even Trump’s closest advisers to disabuse him of anything, but they really need to try hard on this one.

Finally, Trump needs to visit President Moon and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe before and after this trip—and Trump’s aides need to brief their counterparts on everything Trump and Kim discuss—in order to assure them that, whatever comes out of this improbable summit, their security interests aren’t being compromised. The leaders of China, Russia, the European Union, and the U.N. Security Council will also have to be brought in somehow, as they will play a role in enforcing whatever comes of it—or, if nothing comes of it, Trump needs to explain why, so they don’t abandon the existing sanctions.

This is a potentially exciting moment and a perilous one too. Kim understands that it’s both. The question is whether Trump does and whether he can bring himself to do what needs to be done—before, during, and after the event—to keep it from being a mere spectacle and ego trip.

    EDIT

Trump shot off his mouth and got excited and then his advisers had to explain to him why he can’t do that. Or maybe they haven’t explained it to him and are backing out without his permission. Whatever the explanation, the major policy change Trump announced appears to be completely moot because he plays the president on television but isn’t really president.

    https://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2018/03/trump-is-meeting-with-kim-jong-un -wait-maybe-not-wait-yes-he-is/

Was kann dabei rauskommen? Foreign Policy schreibt wenig enthusiastisch:

By now, you’ve heard that Donald Trump is meeting with Kim Jong Un by May. You’ve probably also seen the White House walking it back. And then, anonymously, walking it forward again. Things are crazy. Let’s try to sort through it all.

North Korea has been desperate for a state-visit from a sitting U.S. president since at least the Clinton administration. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders has said that the United States has not made any concessions, but let’s be clear: THE MEETING IS THE CONCESSION.

Although President Trump seems to be under the impression that the meeting would be to discuss the elimination of North Korea’s nuclear weapons, the North Koreans haven’t said anything remotely like that. [...]

It seems that none of Trump’s aides told him the invitation was nothing special — that North Korea desperately wanted such a visit for more than 20 years. Nor did his staff consider the possibility that North Korea wasn’t offering to abandon its nuclear weapons programs. Maybe none of them realized that.

But perhaps there is a darker reason. Maybe the staff are terrified. We’ve read stories that, on the Iran deal, the goal, among experts in the administration, was to distract the president. Maybe the staff is generally afraid that Trump is going to do something insane on North Korea and latched on to this opportunity to shift the president’s focus from fire and fury to cheeseburger summits. That’s what we’re all doing on the outside — looking at this mess and thinking, well, it’s crazy but it beats the alternative. [...]

They may think they are pulling one over on Trump, but what happens when he realizes that Kim Jong Un isn’t giving up the bomb? Do we think the U.S. president is so dumb that he will just be beguiled by tens of thousands of North Koreans packed into a stadium holding up cards that form a picture of his smiling face? Don’t we think that he will, eventually, realize that Kim is getting the better of him? And what happens then? We should be careful that Trump’s childish optimism does not curdle into bitter resentment. In that case 2019 might be more dangerous than 2017.

    http://foreignpolicy.com/2018/03/09/nixon-goes-to-mcdonaldland/

Before the country began its nuclear program in the late ‘80s, North Korea thought the weapons could be a good bargaining chip for normalizing relations with the U.S. In the past 20 years, North Korea has instead come to see them as non-negotiable.

This doesn’t mean that North Korea will never give up its nuclear weapons—but it will likely take a lot more than a visit from President Trump.

Was soll man da auch kommentieren?

McCabe embodies virtually all of the things that anger Trump the most—Russiagate, "Crooked Hillary," the FBI, Barack Obama, the deep state—and he is, unlike most of the other windmills Trump is tilting at, within the President's reach. So, of course Trump desperately wanted to fire him.

    http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2018/Senate/Maps/Mar17.html#item-1

“This is part of an effort to discredit me as a witness,” he told the New York Times.

“Here is the reality: I am being singled out and treated this way because of the role I played, the actions I took, and the events I witnessed in the aftermath of the firing of James Comey,” McCabe said in his public statement. [...]

Trump knows that Comey’s version of events potentially places him in grave jeopardy for a finding that he obstructed justice. McCabe is reported to be one of the few men who can offer some corroboration as to Comey’s version of events. While he was Comey’s No. 2, McCabe was reportedly told by Comey about what happened in Trump’s meetings with the then-FBI director. In December., CNN reported that McCabe testified before the House Intelligence Committee that Comey had told him of those conversations—which were also memorialized in contemporaneous notes by Comey—shortly after they occurred.

The firing is not only a way to strip McCabe of his pension, but would be a perfect way to try to discredit McCabe in any future testimony against the president. Indeed, the president wasted no time in gloating over the firing on Friday and attacking the credibility of both Comey and McCabe.

“Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI - A great day for Democracy,” the president tweeted. “Sanctimonious James Comey was his boss and made McCabe look like a choirboy. He knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the FBI!” This is certainly what an attack on the rule of law would sound like.

Kudlow is not a trained economist, but he does go on television and pretend to have expertise on economic matters. And why wouldn't that be exactly the type of person Donald Trump would look for in a chief economic adviser? After all, Trump was only able to run for president because of a stint on reality television, where he pretended to be a decisive and wise business leader.

    • McCabe Unleashed: A savvier political operator might have realized, as LBJ put it, that it's sometimes better to have enemies "inside the tent pissing out, as opposed to outside the tent pissing in." Trump might have been wise to dispatch an underling to chat with McCabe, and to make a deal that he would be allowed to retire with dignity if he agreed to button his lip. Now, however, McCabe has no reason to be silent. He's already spoken out, blasting "this Administration's ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation." He is going to be a popular guest on CNN, MSNBC, the Sunday news shows, etc. for a good long time. He's undoubtedly also going to file a lawsuit, which probably won't be succesful, but will keep this matter in the headlines for months. And he might just get to depose Trump under oath, with all that entails.

    • The FBI Unleashed: Certainly, some FBI agents are Republicans, just as some are Democrats. But, almost without exception, their first loyalty is to the Bureau. There can be no doubt that Trump is now at war with them, and they will certainly close ranks. At the same time they are watching one another's backs, they will also be watching extra closely for evidence of malfeasance by members of the administration. Sparring with the FBIrarely works out well [electoral-vote.com] for presidents, and that's before we consider that this particular president's closet has so many skeletons it could be confused with the Paris catacombs.

    • The Bureaucracy: Everyone in the government has now been put on notice that their future, including the pension they have earned over the years, is subject to being snuffed out if they offend the President. This, needless to say, will not be good for morale. Donald Trump probably does not care about that, but there are two things that he really should care about. First, it is the bureaucrats who actually carry out the president's policies; their significance is so great that political scientists sometimes refer to the bureaucracy as the fourth branch of the government. If their enthusiasm is low, Trump's policies won't be as vigorously carried out as he would like, and they may not be carried out at all. Second, while The Donald is happy to leave a lot of jobs vacant, he does have to hire some people. And every time he behaves in this manner, that gets harder.

    http://www.electoral-vote.com

Since the firing of James Comey, the staff members around Trump have managed to placate, delay, or contain some of these impulses. But nearly every reporter following the White House now agrees that Trump is moving into a new phase of his presidency. He is aware that he has surrounded himself with people who consider him a moron or are trying to save the country from his madness, and he is relentlessly casting them off.

Trump may not be systematically breaking through the protective ring that has surrounded him, because he is barely capable of doing anything in a systematic fashion. But in fits and starts he is lurching in the same basic direction. He is doing the things his aides told him he could not do, or refused to carry out. Imposing tariffs was a major step in asserting his autonomy. Firing Rex Tillerson in humiliating fashion was another. The case that he would leave Mueller alone relied on the assumption that Trump would stay contained forever. That assumption is crumbling.

Donald Trump loves yes men. And on Saturday, we learned a little bit more about how Larry Kudlow secured his new job as Chair of the National Economic Council. Reportedly, he told the President with a straight face that the nation's economy is on the verge of 4% to 5% annual growth. Never mind that the last time it achieved 4% was 20 years ago, and never mind that there is no evidence to support this conclusion, and never mind that Kudlow's predictions are often comically bad. This was what Donald Trump wanted to hear, and this is what Kudlow said, and voila—"you're hired!"

    http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2018/Senate/Maps/Mar18.html#item-3

“The young man last night that ran, he said, ‘Oh, I’m like Trump. Second Amendment, everything. I love the tax cuts, everything.’ He ran on that basis,” Trump said. “He ran on a campaign that said very nice things about me. I said, ‘Is he a Republican? He sounds like a Republican to me.’”

Wer beeinflusst hier eigentlich wen? Wirklich bizarr.

Fox News isn’t going to stop itself. They allow conspiracy theorists to make hay out of baseless lies. There is evidence that the hosts see their jobs as advising Trump — talking directly to him — and that Trump sees them as his main information source. And now Trump is thinking of filling his Cabinet with these people.

This McCabe story was Fox News yet again painting a picture of an alternate reality where justice was served; it was Fox News yet again attacking people it sees as villains in the plot to take down President Trump. These aren’t individual news narratives built in a vacuum, but rather parts of a larger story that Fox News is telling.

And at this point in Fox News’s alternate storyline, with the given character arcs, there seems to be only one logical conclusion: The Mueller investigation is not valid and must end.

    EDIT

A handful of dissidents, all of whom are retiring from elected office, have attacked the president as unfit for office. A considerably larger group on the right has staunchly defended every aspect of his performance. But the largest faction of the party has taken the position that Donald Trump is a fantastically successful president whose main error is undisciplined tweeting. [...]

Trump’s party is giving every impression of quiescence. And that passivity, in turn, is feeding Trump’s confidence and aggression.

    EDIT

There was a brazen plot to illegally exonerate Hillary Clinton and, if she didn’t win the election, to then frame Donald Trump with a falsely created crime. Everything we have seen from these texts, and from all the facts developing, shows that the FBI and senior DOJ officials conspired to violate the law, and deny Donald Trump his civil rights.
